Wear a Helmet!

An ‘Epic Ride’ ridden by a party of 14 cyclists from East Midlands Ambulance Service started as a fun challenge but with a serious message.

Andy Ramsden writes, ‘We rode to promote safer cycling, especially the use of cycling helmets. This is especially close to our hearts due to the nature of our work, the horrific injuries we see and also due to the injuries sustained by the son of a fellow Paramedic.

16 year old Ryan was struck by a van causing serious brain injuries. Following the accident Ryan's family and friends set up The Ryan Smith Foundation.  Our fundraising was to raise funds for the foundation as well as Headway UK – the UK’s brain injury charity working to improve life after brain injury.

The support vehicle made things much easier, carrying all of our non-bike gear, and stopping roughly every 15 miles for refreshment stops.

Two days after the ride, the total raised is still on the increase but it looks like we are going to raise over £2500 for the 2 great causes.

All 14 of us and a support vehicle had an absolutely epic 3 days. Finally, a special thanks to 3 Peak Cycles at Settle for sorting mechanical problems at short notice.’
